International Student Language Courses of Lanzhou University of Technology

I. System of Language Courses:

1. Language classes (Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced) start at the beginning of each semester (about 4.5 months);

2. Language classes of summer vacation (Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced) (1 month);

3. Students who study 1 month and 3 months can choose to study in Language classes at the beginning of each semester or in Language classes of summer vacation.

II. Teaching-hour requirements:

1. 18 hours per week (compulsory) for Elementary learners;

2. 14 hours per week (compulsory) and 4 hours per week (selected) for Intermediate and Advanced learners (Please refer to the directory of selected courses).

III. Objectives:

1. Through study of 1 year and a half (Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced), Beginners learning Chinese can have necessary communication skills of living in China and pursuing degrees in Chinese Universities, solve problems in daily life with the language knowledge and skills, and meet the requirements of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of level 3 of HSK.

2. Students having certain language fundamentals can directly study in the intermediate and advanced classes to learn Chinese after the admission test.

IV. Teaching Principles:

1. Teachers will play the leading role in student-centered class;

2. The teaching process will focus on practicing and improving communication skills;

3. The teaching content will focus on the practicality to meet the actual needs of learners;

4. With a variety of teaching methodologies,modern teaching methods will be used.

5. Teachers will adhere to the norms and acceptability of language teaching. Standard Mandarin Chinese will be used in language class, the pace and terms will be suitable for students. If necessary, teachers can choose to use some English;

6. Teachers will organize various forms of language practice activities with full use of the environment of Chinese language and culture.

Elementary Chinese

A basic comprehensive course. It is designed for 0-level beginners or those who have little knowledge of Chinese. The grammar, pronunciation and Chinese characters are taught in this course which aims to primarily prepare students in their basic listening, reading, speaking and writing ability.

Elementary Spoken Chinese

A specific course is designed to make students acquire the primary skill in Chinese listening and speaking through the situational dialogue and specific topics.

A specific course aims to improve students’ speaking and listening skills through conducting audio materials and related exercises.

Reading and Writing of Chinese Characters

A specific course aims to improve students’ identifying, reading and writing ability of Chinese characters by imparting the structures and writing procedures of Chinese characters.

Pronunciation Correction Course

A specific course focusing on the way Chinese pronunciation system-Pinyin are pronounced in combination with the error correction practice in this respect.

A basic comprehensive course designed for students with elementary Chinese language knowledge, aims to improve students’ comprehensive skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing and to increase and broaden their vision and cultural background.

Intermediate Spoken Chinese

A specific course aims to improve students’ spoken ability in making dialogues and the ability of oranizing sentences into logic paragraphs through situational dialogues and specific topics.

A basic comprehensive course is designed for students with intermediate Chinese level and basic grammar, aiming to further upgrade students’ language skills and strengthen their deep understanding to Chinese society and its brilliant culture as well.
