Australia's Victoria State Premier Makes first Overseas Visit to China
Australia's Victoria state premier Ted Baillieu on Wednesday left here for China on his first overseas visit as premier.
Bailieu will hold a series of government and business meetings in Shanghai, Nanjing, Beijing and Hong Kong.
Bailieu said Victoria and China share a very close relationship across education, science and technology, healthcare, tourism and cultural exchange.
He said the visit is part of the Victorian state government's commitment to growing and developing Victoria's relationship with China.
"Today, China is Victoria's largest and most important trading partner and this solid base will become the dynamic driver of growth and prosperity for Victoria over the next 30 years," Baillieu said in a statement.
"As China seeks to transition to a more services-oriented economy, Victoria with its expertise in the areas of urban design and planning, health and aged care, agricultural services and international education will be well-placed to maximize these opportunities.
"Victoria is a partner with the capacity to enable China's next stage of development. The next steps for Victoria will be to strengthen our economy by pursuing new opportunities in two-way trade between our countries."
Recently, Bailieu has announced the expansion of Victoria's existing business offices in China and the establishment of a Beijing office to operate as a 'commercial embassy' for Victoria.
Baillieu will return to Melbourne next week.
