Study in Nanyang, Henan Province
...........................................................................................................................................

Situated on the southern bank of the Hanjiang River in the southwest of Henan Province, Nanyang City is a basin surrounded by mountains on three sides-the Funiu Mountains to the north, the Tongbai Mountains to the east and the Qinling Mountains to the west. The landscape is divided by mountains, hills and flatland. Nanyang enjoys a climate in a transitional zone marked by distinctive seasonal changes. The land here is fertile with abundant rainfall and mineral deposits, which make it a treasure land with great potential for development of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, sideline occupations, fisheries, and industry.

As one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, Nanyang has a long history. It is one of the famous historical and cultural cities first opened to the outside world. As one of the places with the most concentrated Han Dynasty culture. Nanyang is a major tourist place in central China. The dinosaur egg fossils unearthed in Nanyang Basin in 1993 have been classified as the "World Legacy" by the UNESCO. Protection against exploitation of dinosaur egg fossils has been placed on the World Agenda 21.

Nanyang has an excellent geographical location. With super communications and transport facilities, it is the vital communication line between Henan, Hubei, Sichuan, and Shanxi Provinces. The Jiaozuo-Liuzhou railway runs through its territory. The Nanjing and Xi'an railway, crossing the Jiaozuo-Liuzhou railway here, is under program. Here in Nanyang highways extend in all directions and the Boeing 737 airlines can fly directly to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and some other cities.

With perfect communication facilities, the national and international long-distance telephone network and direct calls can be made to 183 countries and regions. Nanyang is supported by the Central China Grid, thus ensuring an adequate power supply to the city. The Yahekou and the Pushan Power Plants, which are under construction, will to into operation successively in 1991 and 1998. By that time, Nanyang will have become a region in Central China with sufficient power resources.

Nanyang is rich in wheat, rice, corn and cotton production, and this makes it the main city in Henan for grain-transference to other provinces. The yields of grain, cotton, edible oil here occupy a dominant position in the province.

Nanyang is a newly-developed industrial city. Six mainstay industries, i.e., machinery, electronics, petrochemicals, textiles, pharmaceuticals, food-processing, and building materials, have been emerged.
