China Mobile, the world's leading mobile operator by subscribers, expected to see bigger demands for smartphones in the coming years, a senior company official told Friday's China Daily.
The company sees sales of smartphone expanding in "double digits" in coming years, at least two-to-three times faster than other phone sales, said Bill Huang, general manager of China Mobile's research institute.
The forecast followed the company's plan unveiled last month to sell 3G smartphones using a lower-cost cellphone platform called OPhone.
"Over next three to five years, 50 percent of our users will migrate to smartphones, " said Huang.
Currently about 10 percent of China Mobile's clients use smartphones, he said.
