History
Mudanjiang, also called Mudan Ula by  Manchu, stands for a meandrous river. In the 2,300 years from the Shang  Dynasty (shāng cháo 商朝) (16th-11th century BC) to Sui Dynasty (suí  cháo 隋朝) (581-618), it was inhabited by the ancestors of the Manchu. The central  government began to administrate this area in the Tang Dynasty (táng  cháo 唐朝) (618-907) and it was one of the headstreams of the uprising of the  Qing Dynasty (qīng cháo 清朝) (1644-1911). The city gains its name for  the Mudanjiang River flowing through it.

Climate
Mudanjiang has a  humid continental climate, with long, bitter winters, and very warm and humid  summers. Average temperatures range from a low of ?22.6 °C (?8.7 °F) in January  to a high of 27.9 °C (82.2 °F) in July. Spring and fall are quick and relatively  dry transitional periods. The annual precipitation of 537 millimetres (21.1 in)  falls mainly from May to September. Its weather is cool and rarely windy in  spring and autumn.June to September is the best time to Mudanjiang City, not  only for the cool weather, but also for the highest water level of a year. That  will be the best time to viewing waterfall and boating on  lakes.

Tourism
The cityscape of  Mudanjiang is characterised by the encircling mountains and meandering River  Peony, which divides the downtown area. Located in the southeast of Heilongjiang  Province, the area is widely known for its dramatic scenery and natural  wonders.
With close proximity to the Russian border and the popular winter  holiday destination of Harbin, Mudanjiang enjoys a healthy tourist trade.  Visitors flock to marvel at sights such as the underground forest, volcanic  craters, waterfalls and ancient buildings. The harsh winter brings a thick  blanket of snow, providing grounds for a range of leisure activities such as  skiing, skating and horse-drawn sleighing.
