A Finnish new study shows that eating berries helps risky people to avoid a dangerous liver condition known as fatty liver, caused by the build-up of excessive fat in the liver, Finnish media reported on Thursday.
Finnish researchers from the University of Turku examined the effects of buckthorn, blueberry, lingonberry and blackcurrant on liver metabolism.
A group of 61 slightly overweight women participated in the study, and the women were divided into two groups. While both groups were given instructions of healthy lifestyles, one of which had been given a daily dose of 163 grams of three different berries for five months.
The result of study shows that liver fat declined by 23 percent among those in the group that ate berries. The berry-eaters also saw a slight decrease to their blood pressure. No any changes were reported in the livers of those in the other group. The preliminary results are very promising, but the researchers say further studies are still necessary because of the relatively small size of the test group.
Currently, fatty liver, which is risk factor for metabolic syndrome, is quickly spreading through the western world. The new Finnish study brings light to shielding against the disease.
