A bulk of imported seafood, such as Australian lobster, abalone and Indonesian crabs are recently flooded in to Xiamen market as China applied zero tariff treatment to the ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Free Trade Area.
Mr. Zhang, general manager of a Xiamen seafood imported company said that they just imported a batch of crabs from Indonesia and they were sold out shortly after the cargo plane arrived at the airport. "We plan to import 20 tons of crabs before the Chinese New Year." said Mr. Zhang.
Although Xiamen is a seafood-producing city, the
production is limited in the winter and some seafood, such as squid and
ribbonfish, are hard to get. Therefore, seafood imports can make up the market
defect. According to Xiamen Customs, 16,046 tons of seafood products had been
imported in 2009.
It is reported that these imported seafood products
are cheaper than the local seafood since China carried out zero tariff treatment
to the ASEAN Free Trade Area at the beginning of this year.
