UNIVERSITY OF ELECTRONIC SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY OF CHINA (UESTC)

Located in Chengdu, a time-honored city famous for its history, culture and landscapes, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) is reputed as “ the cradle of China ’s national electronic industry”.

In 1956, the inception of Chengdu Institute of Radio Engineering (CIRE), now UESTC, ushered in the first higher education institute of electronic information of new China. CIRE was, and then created from combination of the electronic divisions of well-established universities as Jiaotong University, Nanjing Institute of Technology and South China Institute of Technology. As early as in the 1960's, it was ranked as one of the nation's key higher education institutions. In 1997, UESTC was included in the first group of the universities in the “211 Project”, a national program for promoting China 's higher education. In Sept. 2001, UESTC was selected as one of the Chinese universities that gain special financial supports from both the Ministry of Education and the local Provincial Government (Project “985”). (Only about 39 key universities in China have been selected as “985 university”).

Today UESTC has developed into a multidisciplinary university directly under the Ministry of Education, which has electronic information science and technology as its nucleus, engineering as its major field, and incorporates nature science, management, economics and liberal arts. UESTC has more than 3, 000 faculty members, of whom 7 are academicians of CAS & CAE, 196 PhD supervisors, 325 full professors and 483 associate professors. It has a current enrollment of 26,000 students, including about 10, 000 PhD and MS students. Since its foundation in 1956, UESTC has trained more than 100,000 graduates.

UESTC now consists of 14 schools, plus Chengdu College and Zhongshan College. It offers 41 undergraduate programs, 62 programs for the MS degree, and the MBA and Engineering master programs. UESTC has 36 specialties authorized to confer Ph. D. UESTC is the only higher institute which covers all 6 national key disciplines in electronics and information science in China. Besides it has 22 Ministerial or Provincial key disciplines, 4 National Key Labs and 39 Ministerial or Provincial Key Labs. UESTC has achieved 43 scientific national awards, over 600 ministerial or provincial awards, about 500 patents and 20,000 scientific papers and books have been issued within the decade. The research fund in 2007 reaches 0.51 billion RMB.

UESTC has two campuses, occupying 2.67 km2 (about 660 acres). It possesses 25,000 sets of equipment, a library of over three million volumes, and will have the largest Gym of Asia in the new campus.

Encouraged by the spirit of “strive for the excellent; never settle for being adequate”. Now, UESTC starts a new way to internationalization, to develop UESTC into the resources of High Technologies and the base of cultivating talents with creativity, to propel UESTC to a university with world academic reputation featured in electronics and information science.
