Wu Bangguo (R), chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, listens while Thai Princess Chulabhorn plays guzheng, a Chinese zither with 25 strings, in Beijing, China, Dec. 15, 2009.

"With the efforts of the Thai royal family, I believe China and Thailand will usher in a robust growth of comprehensive cooperation and a stronger friendship between their people," Wu told Princess Chulabhorn.

Princess Chulabhorn is leading a delegation here to stage a gala, "the Fourth Gala of China-Thailand: Two Lands, One Heart." The visit was her fifth one to China in 2009.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China-Thailand relations have developed smoothly since the two nations forged diplomatic ties in 1975, citing consolidated traditional friendship, deepening cooperation on politics, defense, culture as well as economy and trade.

Wu attributed the smooth growth of bilateral relations to the joint efforts of both governments, peoples and the royal family of Thailand.

Princess Chulabhorn told Wu her love for China's culture and classical musical instruments. She said she would like to serve as an ambassador to introduce the Chinese culture and boost the friendship between Thailand and China.

At the evening gala later Tuesday, Princess Chulabhorn gave a performance by playing the guzheng -- a Chinese zither with 25 strings. She played five pieces of Chinese and Thai songs.

Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong was present at the gala.

Princess Chulabhorn and her delegation will also travel to China's financial powerhouse of Shanghai and Dongguan, a city in southern Guangdong Province.

The gala "China-Thailand: Two Lands, One Heart", as one of the important China-Thailand cultural exchange programs set by the two governments, took place in Beijing in 2002 and Bangkok, capital of Thailand, in 2001 and 2005.
